We all have different ways of reading a book and of knowing if we’re going to start reading it and finishing it.

So I’m curious to know, how does this happen for you?

Write in the comment section how you pick a book and choose to buy it or not.

What are the three things you have a look at?

And since I have written my own book, I want to find out who reads it and how.

These are some of the answers that were given to me:

  • Start from the back
  • Read through the Table of Contents
  • Skim through all of the chapters
  • Put it aside and get back to it later
  • Schedule a time to read it
  • Look at the pictures first
  • Read it cover-to-cover in one sitting

Here are more developed answers people suggested me to share:

I read very slowly. I’m capable of reading faster but if reading for enjoyment I choose not to. I like to absorb every paragraph, line and word. If something speaks to me I’ll reread it as many time as pleases me. When I finally finish a book I feel as though I’ve become one with it. Is this because I’m an empath, who knows. I just know I’m not receiving any fast reader awards hahaha. Deborah

And about Under the Hat

Some of the comments I’ve received about my book were the following:

“Loved the details and well written”

“I cried with the courage chapter”

         “It was just lovely”

“I gave it to two friends already”

“Loved the end of the book”

Thank you all for reading and supporting UNDER THE HAT.

    1. I usually pick a book with the best content that I can find, on a topic that I want to know more about..A book that gives knowledge and inspiration. Writing at 90 is definitely an inspiration..I am currently working on getting my first book together. It’s hard because I have so many topics that I want to write about. So I jot things down for reference.. I have no idea what is involved with getting it copyrighted and printed but I definitely will Google and talk with others who have knowledge…

I am autistic with selective mutism. And for me books were my way of learning about ‘ the humans’. I was severely abused as a child, so learning directly from humans wasn’t a preferred method of data gathering. Although autistic, I am very intelligent. My social skills may be lacking but I would venture to say , the majority of humans are lacking in some sense. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. For me books were a way to emerge in ‘Life’s ‘ and see through eyes without the physical pain that comes from the lessons gleaned from pages. I had enough of that in real life. I read the Bible as my mother was religious, and had questions, that’s when. I learned ‘ the humans’ don’t like questions, they don’t like to look too deep. Not when if that looking will make them have to self reflect and change. As years went by, through childhood, books were my only friends, that and the wind, trees and flowers. Watching ‘ the humans’ from distance and from their stories in these ‘ books’. And then came the internet and limitless readable information. But nothing, NOTHING will ever take the place of the feel, the smell , the sound of pages turning, and the ability to lose oneself within another world. To see and understand from others points of view. If you allow yourself to fully immerse, there is NO BOOK WRITTEN that would leave you unchanged. And now that I have lived some, traveled and experienced cultures and lands, from five star hotels in Dubai to cutting a thousand heads of cabbage at a S Korean orphanage, or meeting my childrens father under reigning bombs in Iraq where I slept in a tent , wore flack gear and we had to showered in river water that had bodies and chemical war agents. It is my turn to return the favor and keep the story going. We,are The Never Ending Story! Isn’t that exciting! As long as we can dream and reimagine, life meets us in this moment. From quantum physics to spiritual, it’s all made up! Why can’t you trust an Atom? Because they make up EVERYTHING! Good Journeys My Friend, Stefanie Yavonne Farren

Thank you so much for sharing this with us and what an incredible journey you’re on – and how brave you are to face all of those challenges the way you do. I am so grateful that books bring us closer and give us the opportunity to meet such extraordinary human beings! Florence and Emilie

I loved Florence from the first image I saw. There is something to be said of a good outfit and a proper hat, especially when adorned by a beautiful woman. The intelligence , kindness, humor and sheer whimsy , screamed from her image. Very delightful. And seemingly a lost art, that need revisiting.

      2. Totally agree with you – a few weeks after meeting Florence and spending time with her, I went on the ferry to Seattle with a hat on my head – many people talked to me and I even was approached by a man who engaged quite a long conversation with me – received several compliments – I was amazed by the power of the Hat 🙂 Emilie

  3. Lately I have decided to let others inspire me. I registered on a whim to a public reading activity at my local library. Don’t we all remember how much we enjoyed when our parents were reading to us at bedtime? Then we become teenagers and adults and lose that wonderful connection with someone reading to us out loud. The woman doing the reading chose a few short stories from authors from Quebec (where I immigrated many years ago) and everything was delightful. When the activity ended, I asked her to recommend novels I might enjoy. So now I am reading Gabrielle Roy and Michel Tremblay and savouring their stories which deepen my connection with my province of adoption. This is a brand new way for me of choosing books: finding someone who inspires me, getting to know them a bit and asking them to recommend a book they think I might enjoy.

  4. What a great topic, Florence!

I read to learn. I check reviews, the table of contents, skim the first chapter. If I feel engaged, like the style, find it adds to my knowledge base and gets to the point, I purchase. Then, I read slow and take notes, turn page corners, add bookmarks. Even more fun, I recommend the book to a friend so we can discuss it, debate it, deepen the learning.

  5. I read mostly non-fiction, looking for information and greater understanding of a topic. Often, the books come recommended. I usually scan content before buying.
